Biogas cogeneration powers oldest US brewery

In a move to save energy and improve the efficiency of its beer-making process, the oldest brewery in the US has installed a biogas cogeneration plant.

The Yuengling brewery (pictured) in the state of Pennsylvania now has a 400 kW combined heat and power (CHP) plant which covers 20% of its power needs. The heat will be used in the pasteurization process, meaning less steam can be used to heat the tunnel pasteurizers, resulting in significant energy savings.

The CHP system from 2G Cenergy includes an anaerobic digester designed by EMG (Environmental Management Group International), as well as a gas treatment system to dehumidify the saturated gas and remove H2S from the raw biogas. The system has been designed as a dual-fuel module and can be operated on low-BTU biogas, as well as pipeline quality natural gas.

The system is ‘definitely ahead of the curve on technology, and a huge jump forward,’ said Robert Seaman Jr, Yuengling Plant Manager.

Ulrich Nielen, Sales Director at 2G Cenergy, said: ‘This is an exciting investment for Yuengling, not only because of the many savings and advantages that the facility will create for the breweries economy, but also because this is a significant milestone in our growing presence in the American brewery market segment.’
