District heating systems to benefit as new flexible piping unveiled

CPV has unveiled a new pre-insulated pipe system, which looks set to cut piping installation times on district heating systems.

The UK company has introduced the flexible piping, known as Hiline Flex, and said it is designed for use in buried heat networks.

The piping’s design enables it to evade unforeseen buried obstacles and it can therefore help to cut piping installation times. The low frictional resistance of the service pipe also means that smaller pipe dimensions can be employed when compared to its steel equivalent - further lowering the capital cost for district heating system owners and developers.

Mark Whettall, CPV's managing director said, “Although pre-insulated steel pipe systems still have an important role to play - particularly in the larger-scale distribution networks and arterial supplies, we're seeing many more hybrid systems being developed that use a combination of both steel and flexible PE-Xa systems for the smaller distribution networks.”

The piping consists of a cross-linked polyethylene (PE-Xa) service pipe which is encased within a highly-efficient bonded layer of polyurethane foam insulation, which in turn is protected by a distinctive corrugated green outer casing of LDPE. The pipes are available in dimensions ranging from 25mm up to 160mm OD  in single, and, in certain dimensions, twin PE-Xa service pipe configurations.

CPV has also recently constructed a new training centre that is enabling the company to certify engineers, installers and supervisors in the best practices for high-quality installation methods for pre-insulated heat networks.
