Web-based tool to map Indian cities’ rooftop solar potential

A web-based tool that will estimate the potential for rooftop solar power in India’s cities is to be launched in Chandigarh.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) unveiled its new cloud-based, open-source tool last week. It is based on Geogra Rooftop on-site solar phic Information System (GIS) technology, using data visualisation to produce a map of a given city showing buildings with the potential for solar photovoltaic installations.

Chandigarh, where government buildings will soon be powered by rooftop solar panels, will be the first city to be mapped. At the tool’s launch, Shivraj Patil, governor of Punjab province, said, ‘We have taken a decision to install rooftop solar energy devices in government buildings in Chandigarh to become a model solar city.’

Support for the tool’s development comes from the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, the Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry.
