Biofuel expansion for New York CHP plant gets political support

State senators have weighed in on the proposed US$50 million expansion of a State senators have weighed in on the proposed US$50 million expansion of a combined heat and power plant in Ogdensburg, New York, US.

Plans to upgrade the 80-MW power plant, which supplies steam to Ogdensburg’s prison and the nearby St Lawrence Psychiatric Center, have received support from state Senators Patricia Ritchie and George Maziarz. The latter chairs the state’s energy committee.

The plant uses GE LM6000S and LM2500 gas turbines and has been operational since 1994. The proposed expansion would include a new biofuel boiler which would burn locally-grown woody feedstock.

Developer Eagle Creek Renewable Energy wants to build the biomass facility with plant owner Alliance Energy, but needs Senate support to ensure that there is a market for its green energy, Ritchie said.
