Parliament says cogeneration is central to Europe's energy future

A draft European Parliament report on the EU’s 2030 climate and energy policy has emphasised the centrality of cogeneration to Europe’s energy future.

The report, produced jointly by the parliamentary ENVI (environment, public health and food safety) and ITRE (industry, research and energy) committees, states that Parliament “sees an important role for cogeneration in increasing energy efficiency in the future” and calls for further support for decentralised and micro-scale energy production and smart energy infrastructures in all Member States. The committees urged the European Commission and Member States to integrate the energy efficiency agenda “as comprehensively as possible into all other policies”.

The report also asks the Commission to develop better methods and tools for calculating and monitoring progress to help draw up a more consistent EU approach to energy efficiency.

Trade body Cogen Europe said the report “falls short of devising any concrete path” toward putting its recommendations in place.
