Scottish biomass plant activated

A biomass energy developer has announced that its 8.3 MW combined heat and power plant in Rothes, Scotland is now operational.

UK firm Helius Energy Plc (LON:HEGY) said it had successfully completed reliability and performance trials at the facility. Using biomass products coming from local malt whisky distilleries, the facility is capable of producing enough electricity to supply 9,000 households, offsetting about 46,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

The heat-to-power system was installed by Helius CoRDe Ltd, a joint venture of Helius Energy, Rabo Project Equity BV and the Combination of Rothes Distillers Ltd (CoRD). The joint entity is now in charge of the site's commercial operation.

The plant also has a liquid animal feed product (Pot Ale Syrup) evaporator station with capacity of 66.5 tonnes per hour. During the performance tests, the installation achieved gross power output of 8.4 MW and net design throughput of 73.2 tonnes per hour of pot ale through the evaporator plant.
