Innovative solution for Sardinian plant

ABB (SIX: ABBN) has been commissioned by Italy's TSO Terna to install a synchronous compensator to adjust power supply from the Codrongianos cogeneration power plant in northern Sardinia.

Project partners plan to commission the $20m power plant project in 2014.

ABB's synchronous compensator can fine-tune and adjust electricity fed into the grid by either generating or absorbing reactive power as needed, regulating voltage and improving the power factor.

Terna manages more than 63,500 kilometers of power lines in Italy and has placed the order to be executed by ABB in association with Ansaldo Energia.

Gas to Power Journal reports that once operational, the Codrongianos CHP will have two synchronous compensator systems. Each system includes a 250 megavolt ampere (MVA) synchronous compensator, excitation system, startup and cooling systems.
