Dalkia upgrades UK hospital's 40 year old energy centre

Dalkia, an energy and utilities management specialist, has upgraded a 40-year old energy centre at Lister Hospital, located in Stevenage in the UK.

Dalkia GBP2.8m (US$4.4m) upgrade, included a 1.4 MWe CHP unit delivered via its specialist CHP division, Cogenco, which supplies the hospital with heating, hot water and electricity.

The contract also included three new boilers, as well as a 15-year energy management contract.

The energy savings achieved by the plant installation and use will help fund the Trust’s monthly payments to Dalkia.

The new energy centre is also maintained 24/7 by Dalkia’s local mobile teams and is expected to save the hospital more than 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Lister’s new CHP system is also expected to lower the East and North NHS Hertfordshire NHS Trust’s carbon emissions by nearly 20%, exceeding the standard 10% reduction by 2015 target set by the Department of Health for NHS organisations.
