Greenvironment to build CCHP plant in Romania mall

Greenvironment Plc has landed an order for a 1.8 MW natural gas microturbine and other components for a combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) plant in Bucharest, Romania.

A letter of intent (LOI) has been signed between TAI s.r.l., Greenvironment’s representative agent, and Societate Dezvoltare Comercial Sudului (SDCS) s.r.l., a company that manages real estate on behalf of the owner of the Sun Plaza shopping mall, Sparkassen Immobilien AG, part of Erste Bank Group (Austria), Greenvironment announced on 19 March.

The CCHP plant will be installed at the Commercial Center building of the Sun Plaza shopping mall. The plant’s installation and commissioning will be realized together with TAI s.r.l. and other regional companies from Romania. The plant is scheduled for completion by the year-end.

Sun Plaza, located in the south of Bucharest, has about 80,000 m2 of lettable space and is described as Romania’s largest shopping mall. The mall hosts more than 130 shops along with many cafes, a food court with 1,200 seats, a cinema centre, a bowling alley, a nursery school and a sports hall.

The CCHP plant will be built, owned and operated by an energy service company (ESCO) that will sell energy to SDCS. This approach ensures a reduction in overall energy costs, especially for the heat and cooling production within mall buildings, along with lower CO2 and NOx emissions, said Greenvironment.

A microturbine solution featuring absorption chillers was ‘unbeatable’ due to high thermal efficiency, availability and reliability as well as low noise levels, lack of vibrations and SCADA system, added the firm.

‘Romania is a very interesting market for Greenvironment,’ said Matti Malkamäki, the company’s CEO. ‘Especially in the field of industrial CHP sales and semi-industrial CCHP sales we now have been able to “break the ice”. We see a strong demand for our solutions and are in advanced negotiations regarding big projects that have very much similar needs compared to Sochi or Sun Plaza. We are convinced that a microturbine is the best economical decision for a large shopping mall.’

Greenvironment said it is in advanced negotiations for projects with a combined capacity of more than 1 MW.
