Solar power generation at Scottish railway stations

Three railway stations in Scotland are producing their own solar power.

The roofs of Fife towns, Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and Leuchars stations are installed with a total of 48 solar panels. The panels at each site are expected to generate 3,300kWh of electricity every year.

The panels capture the solar energy and help directly in power lighting, heating and information signs at the stations.

The radiations captured from solar rays are converted into electricity by the photovoltaic solar panels.

Stewart Cahill, ScotRail s environmental compliance manager, commented that this is an exhilarating 50,000 project as part of ScotRail s efforts to further improve its environmental performance.

Utility Products online reports that Mr Cahill added that with the introduction of photovoltaic tiles in Fife, ScotRail is cutting down its carbon emissions with no adverse effect on the quality service offered to their customers.

The entire power produced by the solar panels is utilized at the stations and none is being sold back to the National Grid.

Transport Minister Keith Brown congratulated ScotRail on its initiative. He praised that ScotRail is doing a great work by cutting down carbon emissions in Scotland and said that he expects similar projects from the part of ScotRail to enhance their environmental performance.
