Wisconsin CHP plant wins sustainability award

The city of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, US, has received an award from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI) for nearing self-sufficiency at its CHP wastewater treatment plant.

Rather than flare excess methane gas — the byproduct from sewage treatment processes that has a greenhouse gas impact on the atmosphere 21 times greater than carbon dioxide — the Sheboygan plant uses methane to fuel ten Capstone C30 and two C200 microturbines in a CHP application.

Using waste methane as fuel the microturbines fulfill 90% of the plant's annual energy needs and nearly eliminate the need to purchase natural gas for heating.

"Sheboygan is one of the most progressive cities in the country when it comes to using renewable energy sources," said Bob Ryan, Sheboygan Mayor.

"Using Capstone microturbines, our sewage treatment plant produces more electricity than we use so we sell it back to the grid. If that's not sustainability, I don't know what is."
