CHP solution for hospital in Rotherham, UK

Rotherham Hospital in Yorkshire, UK, has opted for a CHP system to provide its main source of power as part of the hospital trust’s focus on sustainable waste and energy solutions.

Finning Power Systems supplied the system, which features a containerised Caterpillar G3516B gas engine with an electrical output of 1.1 MWe.

The system uses heat exchangers to harvest heat from the engine block water jacket and exhaust gases to produce hot water.

Due to the proximity to key patient areas of the hospital, all equipment installed, including an external radiator cooling system, has been acoustically modified to produce noise levels of 60 dB(A) within a one-meter radius.

Metering has been installed for the accurate monitoring of energy usage and an automatic control panel provides comprehensive fail safe monitoring and protection.

The generator is synchronised with the main grid supply, which is used when extra power is needed.
