Singapore hotel uses local syngas to fuel trigen plant

As part of an energy-saving initiative by Singapore’s Grand Hyatt, the hotel has opened a trigeneration facility in which readily available ‘waste’ synthetic gas (syngas) is turned into useful heat, power and cooling energy.

The system employs a fuel flexible gas engine from GE Jenbacher to generate energy from gas from the city’s gas pipeline in a project said to be the first of its kind in the world.

The project also helps support Singapore’s environmental and energy efficiency goals to meet growing needs from population increases.

In this one-of-a-kind project, GE provided a Jenbacher JMS 320 gas engine for the combined heat, cooling and power plant at the Grand Hyatt.

GE designed the engine to use the syngas, which has a high content of hydrogen but a low methane content, on site.

The syngas, which is unique to this region, is considered to be a waste gas from the nearby crude oil refinery.

The syngas used in the project requires careful treatment, and the highest safety standards need to be met. To meet these standards, a comprehensive nitrogen flushing system, as well as a comprehensive safety system for the gas valve train had to be installed.

GE’s Jenbacher J320 gas engine provides a power output of 587 kW, with NOx emissions below 500 mg/Nm3.

It was sold to the Tri-Gen Specialist Solution Integrator for the Grant Hyatt-CNA Group through Navigat Energy, an authorized distributor in Indonesia for GE’s Jenbacher gas engines.
