SPS is presented as a “versatile, low-maintenance alternative to many multi-stage split-case centrifugal, positive displacement, and vertical-turbine pump models.” A chart offers SPS, PD and SC comparisons and advantages.
SPS pumps are delivered pre-assembled. The skid assembly is prewired with instrumentation and cabling terminated in a central junction box. Suction and discharge flanges and power hookups are typically the only required connections.
The quiet, low-vibration-operating surface pumps can be electric, gas, or diesel powered. They handle up to 2,500 gpm (85,000 bfpd) and discharge pressures up to 6,000 psi, it’s noted.
The literature cites a variety of applications. These include CO2 injection/booster or sequestration, condensate transfer, crude oil boosting/transfer, geothermal, hydraulic power fluid boosting, lean amine circulation, NGL boosting or transfer, offshore facilities fluid handling, pipeline booster, process fluids transfer, produced water disposal or injection, and seawater disposal/waterflooding.
